Version 1.106:
  • This version brings a major change with regards to the region names of locations. Until now this region name was free text which was either set automatically using the Geocoder of Google Maps, or it was entered by users or set via the import features. Unfortunately the Geocoder returns results in an undefined order, so that sometimes the german name was set and sometimes the english name (or another language name). Also, users have entered names that were not just the name of the state or comparable region, but were more detailed. They were meaning well, but this defeated the purpose of this data field. This data is used to generate checklists and other statistics on the level of states, cantons, provinces etc. instead of only entire countries. So when the entered region names were different while the same region was meant, these statistics were incorrect. Furthermore, users were presented the region names as entered in e.g. German while they were using the english language version of the Atlas.
As a solution you can now select the region only from the list of regions as defined by ISO 3166-2. Internally only the ISO region code is stored. When the region is determined automatically by Google or when it's entered via the import features various variants of the region names can be detected and converted to their ISO code. When importing locations the ISO code also can be used directly. For existing locations their region field was converted. When entering the region manually the same selection element is used as is for e.g. the species name.
The result is uniform region names and correct statistics. Also, region names are displayed according to the language version of the Atlas that is currently used.
If you find that a region is missing or that a location was converted incorrectly, please send me a short notice.
  • The selection button for bookmarks was integrated into the corresponding selection element for species etc.
  • Vernacular names are now displayed for orders (controlled by user settings like with other vernacular names).
